Field Hockey Falls in OT to No. 7 East Stroudsburg
EAST STROUDSBURG, PA – Completing a two-game road trip in
Pennsylvania, the Merrimack field hockey Warriors went 0-2 on the
weekend with a heart-breaking loss to No. 7 East Stroudsburg in
overtime, 3-2, on Sunday.
Freshman net-minder, Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee,
MA), was the “star of the game” in the words of Head
Coach Anne Rounce with 17 saves on the afternoon,
including four in 9:34 of overtime play.
Senior captain Kelly Pasquantonio (Planville, MA)
scored the Warriors' first goal from freshman Jen
Otis (Penacook, NH) to put Merrimack on the board. Later
in the second half, sophomore Stephanie Glazier
(Sandown, NH) knotted the score and forced extra time in a game
Merrimack was outshot 26-15.
Following the match, Rounce had good reason to be
optimistic about the tough road trip against two nationally-ranked
opponents.
“Our defensive corner unit was very strong and showed a lot
of toughness today,” Rouce said. “We
definitely had a lot of good opportunities to win the game. In
particular, Katie Zubkus
distriuted the ball nicely and April
Daugherty created a lot of opportunities for us on
offense. Overall, I think we improved in a lot of areas this
weekend.”
The Warriors return to New England to face UMass-Lowell under the
lights in Lowell on September 2 (7:00pm) to commence their
Northeast-10 Conference play.
