Roy Leads Women's Basketball to Win at New Haven
WEST HAVEN, CT – With a team-high 23 points on 10-of-17
shooting, sophomore Genn Roy (Granby,
MA) rallied the Merrimack women's basketball team
for a win at the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon, 81-72.
With the win, Merrimack improves to 8-12 (6-9 NE-10), while New
Haven fell to 9-11 (7-8 NE-10). The Warriors are currently in
a tie with Southern New Hampshire for 10th place in the
Northeast-10, but the Lady Penmen hold the tie-breaker with a win
in Manchester on December 8.
Senior captain Casey Miller
(Fairbanks, AK) added 16 points as one of four Warriors in
double figures. Junior Tiffany Colon
(Lawrence, MA) had 11 points and freshman Kelly Schatzlein
(Tolland, CT) scored 13.
After falling behind 8-0 to start the game, the Warriors went on a
17-7 run to take their first lead of the game. The first half would
feature six lead changes and three ties before the Chargers hit a
three at the buzzer to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
Merrimack shot just 1-of-10 from long range in the first 20
minutes, but connected on 7-of-10 from the line to remain within
striking distance following the halftime break.
Using 6-of-8 shooting from downtown in the second half, Merrimack
grabbed a 65-63 lead at the 4:27 mark that they would not
relinquish to snap a three-game losing skid.
In the second half, Merrimack shot a blistering 18-of-26 from
the field (69%) to make a run the Chargers could not match.
"We really just played our best when we needed to," said head
coach Helen Williams following the Warriors
final game of January. "I'm proud of our team's second half
effort after having struggled the last few games down the stretch."
The Warriors conclude their two-game road trip at Bentley
University on Wednesday, February 3rd in Waltham at 5:30pm. The
last meeting on November 18, 2009 saw the Falcons on the upside of
a 71-62 decision in North Andover.
