Women's Soccer Battles Molloy to a 2-2 Draw

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y.- The Merrimack women's soccer team played Molloy to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon. The Warriors and Lions both move to 0-1-1 with the draw. The two teams played a scoreless first half before a second stanza goal-fest.

Merrimack's Jenn Pino (North Andover, Mass.) opened the scoring in the second 45 minutes of play, putting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal from 15 yards out. Jessie DeGraan (Braintree, Mass.) earned an assist on the play. Merrimack didn't stop there, as Khara Roman (Orange, Conn.) put the Warriors up two goals with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Roman curved the ball into the goal off of a pass from Pino.

Molloy clawed back into the game with a goal just moments after Merrimack's second goal. In the final ten, minutes, the Lions knotted the score to force overtime.

Neither team could notch a third goal in the extra sessions. Merrimack fired off one shot on goal in the first overtime period while holding Molloy to zero on frame. In the second overtime, the Lions held the Warriors to no shots. Molloy managed to put three shots on target in the period. Merrimack goalkeeper Kiley Horne (Scituate, Mass.) turned aside all three shots to preserve the tie.

Horne finished the contest with five saves for the Warriors. Her counterpart, Tricia Zarro stopped six shots for the Lions.

Merrimack outshot Molloy 17-12 in the game with eight on frame, compared to the Lions' seven. The Warriors also held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.

"I was pleased with the way we played today. Our girls went out and the played extremely hard," said head coach Gabe Mejail. "We need to carry that intensity into next week as we open league-play."

Merrimack will play its first home game of the 2010 season, Sept. 10, as it hosts Adelphi to start the Northeast-10 portion of the schedule.
