Roy Joins 1,000-Point Club as Women's Hoops Falls at Southern NH

MANCHESTER, N.H.- Junior co-captain Gennifer Roy (Granby, Mass.) became the 18th player in Merrimack women's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points. She came into the game sitting at 997 career points.

Roy drained a jumper from the top of the key just inside the three-point arc  5:28 into the game to stand at 999 for a career total. The junior connected on a three-pointer midway through the first half to eclipse the millennium mark.

The Warriors dropped a 69-61 decision at Southern N.H. Wednesday evening. Merrimack dips to 8-14 in the league and 10-16 on the year. The Penmen improve to 11-15 overall and 9-13 in the Northeast-10.

Roy paced Merrimack with 15 points on the night. Taneka Brown (Lynn, Mass.) contributed 13 points and six steals for the Warriors. Tiffany Colon (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors fell behind early, 5-0, before tying the score after three minutes of action. Merrimack claimed its first lead of the night on a layup by Brown four minutes into play. The Warriors pushed their advantage to five points as Valerie Avebe (Yaounde, Cameroon) converted a lay-in with 12:53 to go in the first frame.

The Penmen utilized a 9-0 run to establish a seven-point margin with three minutes left in the opening half.  Five-straight points by Merrimack cut the deficit to two as the first period began to wind down.

Southern N.H. carried a 29-25 lead into the break.

Brown knocked down a trey 2:30 into the second half to draw the visitors to within a point of the hosts. A 7-0 spell by the Warriors spanning 1:25 granted Merrimack its first lead of the second half, 41-40.

The Penmen regained the lead on a three-point play by Julia Houghtaling with 11:02 showing on the clock.

The Warriors knotted the score for the fourth time in the game on a layup by Avebe. Southern N.H. went back on top with a triple on the ensuing possession.

The Penmen silenced the visitors for 4:07 down the stretch before Roy broke the drought with a free throw.

Merrimack shot 34.9% from the field in the game including 30.8 from downtown. Southern N.H. drained half of its field goal attempts in the contest and owned a three-point percentage of 50%.

"Genn has been a hard-worker since she came in as a freshman. She is a vital part of our team and a great leader. It's good to see her accomplish an impressive career achievement like this," said head coach Helen Williams.

The Warriors will prepare for the Northeast-10 playoffs after already securing a spot. Merrimack will await the announcement of its first-round opponent.
