WORCESTER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's rowing team began its 2015-16 season, with a second-place finish out of 18 teams in the Women's Varsity 4+, at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The Basics
Event: Quinsigamond Snake Regatta
Location: Lake Quinsigamond | Worcester, Mass.
What They Said
Head Coach David LeFebvre: "The strong headwind gave us the most challenging conditions we have faced all year, especially in the second half of the race. Our crew was still able to pass several boats, but never fully relaxed and found a solid rhythm necessary for a strong piece. While we would have liked to win, it was nice to see that we are ahead of where we were at this time last year."
How It Happened
The Warriors posted a time of 18:56.779, which cleared the second-place Bowdoin A team by 26.099 seconds. The Warriors trailed first-place New Hampshire by 40.260 seconds at Lake Quinsigamond. The format of the Women's Varsity 4+ event was a head race, also known as a time-trial competition, which resulted in a longer course than the usual Olympic distance of 2,000 meters.
Merrimack utilized its sensational lineup, which consists of sophomore coxswain Jess Khoury (Bay Shore, N.Y.), senior captain and stroke Aubrey O'Neill (Pawcatuck, Conn.), senior third seat Lydia Staschke (Guilford, Conn.), junior second seat Lauren Blazon (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Tasha Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) on the bow.
That lineup has developed a strong chemistry, as it has competed together in six-consecutive events, dating back to last spring. Over that stretch, the team has finished first overall on three occasions, while also collecting three second-place finishes.
