How It Happened
Entering the afternoon it had been nearly two years and 31 games since the top team in the nation had last lost a game, with the Warriors hoping to capitalize on the upset bid against the Panthers.
Adelphi stormed out to a quick start, however, as within the first six minutes of action the hosts held a 5-0 advantage. At the midway point of the half, Adelphi doubled their advantage and after 30 minutes the Panthers led, 14-0.
Senior midfielder Giulia Palombo (Sandwich, Mass.) led the team with three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the first half. Freshman midfielder Annette Ruggiero (Peabody, Mass.) notched a team-high two draw controls, as Merrimack won five draws in the opening stanza. Coming off a career-high 12 saves against No. 17 Dowling on Thursday, freshman goalkeeper Alexa Petzold (Ridgewood, N.J.) came away with six first-half stops against the Panthers.
The Panthers tacked on five goals in the second half to come away with the victory, as the Merrimack defense tightened up over the final 30 minutes. Petzold notched seven saves in the final 30 minutes, to set a new career high with 30 stops. She now has totaled at least 10 saves in the three games this year that the Navy and Gold have faced a ranked opponent.
Up Next
The Warriors return to the action on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when Merrimack heads to Gill Stadium in Manchester, N.H. to play No. 12 Saint Anselm in NE-10 action.
