Pace Hands Women's Volleyball 3-0 Loss Saturday

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.  – The Merrimack College women's volleyball program mounted a late rally in the third set of Saturday afternoon's match at the Goldstein Fitness Center, nearly forcing a fourth frame, but the host Pace University Setters held off the Warriors to win in three sets.

Set Breakdown
  • Set 1: Pace jumped out to a 9-4 advantage before the Warriors opted to use a timeout. With the score at 15-7 Setters, the hosts won 10 of the final 12 points of the frame to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Set 2: A pair of kills for junior Sofia Basauri (Beaverton, Ore.) kept Merrimack within striking distance of taking the lead to start the second. In the middle of the frame, senior Mary Kate McCarroll (Harrison, Ohio) and sophomore Catherine Flaherty (North Andover, Mass.) notched three points to pull the Warriors within four, 15-11.
  • Set 3: Points from Flaherty, McCarroll, junior Katelynn Marr (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Amanda Cain (Melrose, Mass.) allowed the Warriors to keep pace with the Setters over the third's first 18 points, trailing by just two (10-8). The Warriors proceeded to win seven of the next 11 points to go up one, 15-14, and saw the set tied on five occasions after that until Pace went up 21-19, prompting a Merrimack timeout. The Setters brought the game to a set point, 24-21, before the Warriors used their last timeout. Pace won the point coming out of the stoppage, howver, to win the match
Team Leaders (MC // PACE) Notes and Notables
  • Led by 15 from senior captain Christina Nye (Plaistow, N.H.), the Warriors posted 48 digs as a team, the ninth-highest total this season and most in their last five matches
  • Flaherty posted her most kills in the last seven matches, attempting 29 attacks which marked her fifth-highest output this season
