Men's Tennis Drops Pair of Matches Thursday against UDC and Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Merrimack College men's tennis team played a pair of matches on Thursday, beginning that day in Washington, DC with a regional tilt against the University of the District of Columbia, falling by a 5-4 score. The Warriors then moved up the Belt to Baltimore, Md. for a nightcap against Johns Hopkins, which the Blue Jays took by an 8-1 margin.

How It Happened (Doubles) - UDC
- No. 1 – Thanks in part to a win at the first flight, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead into the singles portion of the match. The top option of senior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) prevailed first by doubling up their opposition, 8-4
- No. 2 – The duo of junior Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) and freshman Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) suffered a 8-5 loss at second doubles to give the Firebirds their lone win of the pairings
- No. 3 – The third-flight duo of senior Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Mass.) won a tightly contested match at third double to emerge victorious and give the Warriors a lead. The combination won nine of 16 games and avoided a tiebreak by claiming the 16th game and won by a 9-7 margin
How It Happened (Singles) – UDC
- No. 1 – Belov rallied after losing his first set to knock off the No. 1 option for UDC, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-4, on Thursday afternoon in the nation's capital. The match was one of four to go the distance during singles
- No. 2 – Vega started his singles match strong by not losing a game during the first set, but UDC's Diego Pinto rallied to even the set at one-apiece following a 6-4 win before blanking Vega in the final set
- No. 3 – Majewski squared his match after losing the first set, only to falter in the final frame to concede his singles contest at the third flight, 6-1, 4-6, and 6-4
- No. 4 – Fedorov – the Warriors' lone rookie – continued to shine this spring by sweeping his opponent at the fourth flight, 7-5 and 6-1, to emerge victorious for one of two singles points on the day for the Warriors
- No. 5 – Sheikh nearly gave the Navy and Gold the win at No. 5 after winning his first set, 6-3, but Marco Feligioni from UDC answered promptly to take the final two sets and win the Firebirds' third three-setter of the day
- No. 6 – Slobin was dispatched at sixth singles in straight sets to give the Firebirds the first singles point of the match

How It Happened (Doubles) – Johns Hopkins
- No. 1 – Merrimack used its same doubles combinations as the first match of the day, with Belov/Majewski trotting out at the first flight, but suffering an 8-1 loss
- No. 2 – The closest match of the doubles came at the second flight, with Vega and Fedorov matching with Johns Hopkins' Emerson Walsh and Austin Gu. Merrimack's tandem won four games, but bowed out to the Blue Jays, 8-4
- No. 3 – Johns Hopkins completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the third flight, taking a 3-0 lead into singles
How It Happened (Singles) – Johns Hopkins
- No. 1 – All the singles matches were played as a "pro set" with the first to eight points taking the singles point. Belov slotted in at first singles once again, but lost by four games, 8-4
- No. 2 – Vega emerged as the lone victorious Warrior on the night, taking his opponent to a 17th and deciding game before prevailing by a 9-8 final
- No. 3 – Fedorov played his opponent tightly at the third set, but slipped up by a two-game margin, 8-6
- No. 4 – Mirroring Fedorov's move to a higher flight, Sheikh played up at No. 4, but suffered an 8-2 loss
- No. 5 – Slobin slotted at fifth singles, but was forced to retire after playing just five games of his match
- No. 6 – Junior Thomas O'Brien (Lancaster, Pa.) debuted for the Warriors at sixth singles, playing in his first match of the spring. He win a pair of games, but suffered a loss at the final flight
