NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men's tennis team saw five student-athletes earn Northeast-10 All-Conference honors on Thursday morning, including a major award for freshman Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) who was named the NE10 Rookie of the Year when the league announced its award winners on Thursday morning.
Fedorov became the first Warrior to earn Rookie of the Year honors in eight years after his superb debut season. He posted 16 combined NE10 victories, going 8-1 in both NE10 singles and doubles. He went on a four-week run when he earned NE10 Rookie of the Week consecutively, the most of any player in 2017. He also took home an all-rookie team selection, as well.
Senior captain Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) led the individual honorees with the program's lone first-team selection at third singles. He registered the best record in the conference at 8-1, besting Southern New Hampshire's Miguel Marreiros last week to clinch the top spot at third singles. It marked the fourth-year Warriors' fourth all-league selection at doubles and third at singles.
One of five Warriors to land on the second team at doubles as well as singles, junior Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) finished the season a perfect 5-0 at No. 2 singles to earn his third all-league singles nod in as many seasons. Fedorov's 8-1 mark garnered second-team honors as well, finishing one game shy of landing on the first team. Senior Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) rounded out the singles all-conference second-team group at the sixth flight, finishing 5-1 at No. 6 to pick up his first all-league distinction since his freshman season.
In doubles, the pairing of Majewski and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) finished the conference slate with a 7-2 record to earn all-conference second-team honors. The duo recently was ranked the eighth-best doubles tandem in the region according to the Oracle/ITA Collegiate rankings. The combination of Vega and Fedorov joined their top-flight teammates on the second team at second doubles, boasting a team-best 8-1 record at No. 2.
The Warriors hit the court on Thursday to begin postseason play when the Navy and Gold host Assumption at 2 p.m. in the NE10 Semifinals.
