NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men's tennis program played in its first fall tournament over the weekend, competing against mostly Division I opponents at the UConn Invitational in Storrs, Conn.
The doubles tandem of senior
Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) and sophomore
Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) paired together to knock off the top option from Sacred Heart University, 7-5, in their first match in A Flight Doubles. The Warriors' combination went on to face the No. 1 option from Quinnipiac University, but fell to the Bobcats.
Sophomore
Paul Weidinger (Leipzig, Germany) and senior
Thomas O'Brien (Lancaster, Pa.) debuted as a pair in the B Flight Doubles bracket, matching up with a tandem from the Huskies, but the hosts won the first-round matchup.
In the singles realm, Belov was the lone Warrior to compete in the A Flight, taking Kyle Alper from Quinnipiac to a third set (6-2, 3-6, 4-10). Fedorov played a pair of matches in the B Flight, also facing a member of the Bobcats while wrapping up play against Bentley's George Samander.
Merrimack did see a pair of Warriors win singles matches, with Weidinger topping The College of Holy Cross' Johnny McAuliffe in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-1. Junior
Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) also debuted in Storrs with a three-set win over the Crusaders' Andrew Vroman (6-2, 4-6, 10-7).
The Warriors return to action this weekend when Merrimack travels to New York to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships.
