PROVIDENCE, RI – The Merrimack women's ice hockey team pushed but could not hold on to its lead on the road, falling to the Providence College Friars 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.

How It Happened

• Katie Kaufman carried the puck into the zone and tried to pass it behind the goal line, but had it slowed by a defender. Mikyla Grant-Mentis took the now-idle puck and found an open seam to send it back to Kaufman for a quick shot between the glove and post at 9:33 in the first period.
• Merrimack added to its lead on the power play in the first. Dominika Laskova handled the play from Gabby Jones before firing a no-look pass over to Grant-Mentis, unmarked in the high slot. The rising wrist shot skipped through traffic and in over the Providence netminder's shoulder.
• Providence took advantage of a power play, putting its first goal with 5:41 to go in the third period. The game's equalizer came on a puck punched in deep in the crease with 51 seconds remaining in the game, forcing overtime. The Friars won the game in overtime, redirecting a shot through traffic down low.

Notes & Numbers

• Freshman Emma Gorski made 31 saves in her fifth start this season for the Warriors, and had back-to-back 31 save performances in the weekend against Providence.   
• Grant-Mentis' goal extended her point scoring streak to ten games for 21 points this year, as she extended her lead in Hockey East goal scoring with 13.
• Merrimack has had five games go to overtime this season, with a 1-2-2 record in games with extra times.
