How It Happened
- Merrimack started the game off with a flurry of offensive activity, opening the game with seven shots on goal after working efficiently past the defense in the slot to gain their chances. Providence scored the first on the night on a break into the zone from a neutral zone faceoff, before they notched a second just under a minute and a half later to double the lead.
- The Warriors continued their pressure down low to start the second period, gritting their way to their first tally of the night. Kiki Roust brought the puck in at the top of the zone, handing off to Madison Oelkers who cut in from the boards on goal. The Friars held off Oelkers' initial chance before Hannah Corneliusen's efforts down low sent it home for Merrimack.Â
- Providence retaliated off on a goal from the faceoff to boost the hosts to a two goal lead. Merrimack quashed any chance of momentum for the hosts, drawing a penalty for its first chance on the advantage in the game.Â
- Pushing the face offensively, the Warriors worked the score closer on the power play. Resetting the play from behind the goal line, defender Julia MacLean handled the puck across the blueline before sending it to Gabby Jones. Roust cut down through the hash marks to break up the Friars' defensive positioning before finding Katie Kaufman on the opposite side. Unmarked by the defense, Kaufman squared up and fired her team-leading ninth goal.Â
- In the third, Merrimack notched the equalizer as they carried their momentum to try and work a come-from-behind effort. Along the boards, Ally Qualley pressured the Providence defense to force a takeaway and earn possession down low. Shielding the puck against the oncoming defender, Qualley squared a pass to the driving Emily Oosterveld who connected for the game-tying goal.Â
- Closing the third period the Friars jumped on home ice, notching the game-winning goal with six to play in the game to come away with the late victory.Â
