Warriors Finish Just Short Despite Thrilling 4th Quarter

NORTH ANDOVER, M.A. – The women's lacrosse team hosted Boston University for a midweek out-of-conference matchup. The Warriors and Terriers battled it out, with the Terriers having a comfortable lead most of the way, but the home team had a late push that just nearly brought home a win. Olivia Valdes lead the Warriors with a career-high five goals in the game.

The Basics:
Score: Boston University 17, Merrimack 15
Records: Merrimack 2-8, 2-1 NEC, Boston University 1-11, 0-5 PL

How it happened:
1st quarter:
  • The Boston University offense was ready from the first whistle, as they immediate went on a 4-0 scoring run. The Terrier defense was able to hold off the Warriors for almost the whole quarter.
  • But, with just about two and a half minutes remaining, the Warriors had a run of their own. Dzialo kicked things off for the Warriors, as she grabbed a loose ball and headed straight for the net.
  • Score at end of 1st: 4-3 BU
2nd quarter:
  • Taylor Darrell, Calkins, and Dzialo each had goals in the second quarter to break up a continuously strong visiting offense.
  • Score at end of 2nd: 11-6 BU
3rd quarter:
  • Catherine Mahanna and Olivia Valdes go back and forth each scoring two for their team in the quarter.  Due to their efforts, the Warriors won the quarter 4-3.
  • Score at end of 3rd: 14-10 BU
4th quarter:
  • The Warriors left it all out on the field for the final 15 minutes of play, scoring five in a row, to bring them to as close as a one-goal margin.
  • Valdes went off, scoring three goals in this quarter alone.
  • Her efforts were supported by Sophie Scearbo and Dzialo, but the Terriers scored once more and held Merrimack off the rest of the way to prevent a full come-back.

Final Score: 17-15 BU
