Men's Volleyball Defeated By Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Merrimack College men's volleyball was downed in its first of three matches this weekend by Mount Olive University, 3-0. Zyshonne Lang had a career-high 15 kills during the three set match. Lang also led the team in aces with four on the day. Xander Thesz ranked second in kills with six.

  • A Lang service ace tied the first set at four. Both teams then battled back and forth, Lang once again tied the game with a kill. After the Trojans got a point, Merrimack went on a four-point run to go up by three. Lang had three straight aces. Mount Olive chipped away going down by just one, 19-18. Two points from the Warriors gave them a three-point advantage. The Trojans then scored the last five of the last seven points to steal set one from Merrimack.
  • Both teams had five points early on in the first set. Logan Whitaker had a kill to put the Warriors up by one. Mount Olive battled back a couple points later going up by two. Merrimack found themselves down six. Lang had a kill to cut the lead to five. After back and forth play for a couple of points, Miles Dewhirst had a kill to maintain the five-point deficit. Sage Gatling had a kill late in the set to give the Warriors 19 points and put them down five once again. Merrimack would lose the second set by five.
  • The Trojans went up 9-4 early on in the third set. Thesz killed the run with a kill. After another Warrior point, Mount Olive added four points to go up by seven. Lang stopped this run with a kill. Both Dewhirst and Thesz combined for two kills later on in the set to put Merrimack down eight. The Warriors battle back scoring five points in a row during a match point situation for the Trojans, but it was not enough. Mount Olive ended up winning the final set by four.

Top Performers // Notes
  • Dewhirst and Kyle Standage tied for a team-high eight digs.
  • Carson Bashford had a team-high 28 assists.
  • The Warriors had seven aces, compared to the Trojans who had five.

Merrimack stay in North Carolina to take on Barton College on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
