Brooklyn, N.Y.—The Merrimack Warriors men's volleyball team locked up the final playoff spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament playoff as they defeated the St.Francis Brooklyn Terriers by a set score of 3-1 on Saturday night.
In set 1, both teams would trade points before the Warriors took control scoring nine of the next 11 points, before the Terriers fired right back scoring seven of eight points to pull the difference back to one point, the Warriors however would not lose the lead as they scored five of the next seven points. After one more Terriers run, four straight points from
Matthew Motes and
Miles Dewhirst helped finish off the set win.
In the second set, The Terriers opened up scoring 15 of the 21 points and would control play en-route to the victory.
Despite the tough second set, The Warriors rolled out of the box early scoring the sets first three points and eventually nine of the first 13 set points. The Warriors kept the lead for the rest of the set despite the Terriers pushing the lead back to one before Merrimack would take control back scoring five of the next six points and the Warriors would take their reestablished lead to the end of the set to take a 2-1 win.
Set four would start highly contested as the teams would trade points before the Warriors would find their first of two runs of points as they scored four of five to take a four point advantage. With St. Francis battling back, it became evident that they would need one more push to take this set and the match and would have it, as they scored seven of the next ten points including four straight to ease to the victory, the teams tenth of the season.
Notes and Numbers:
Xander Thesz led the team in kills with 11.
Logan Whittaker scored four aces, leading both teams in the pocess.
Matthew Motes recorded four blocks in the win.
Carson Bashford led the assist totals with 34.
Kyle Standage had 14 digs.
