NEWARK, NJ – The Merrimack College men's volleyball team was unable to complete the weekend sweep as they lost in three sets to NJIT.
The Basics
Score: Merrimack 0, NJIT 3
Records: Merrimack (2-5), NJIT (7-4)
How It Happened
The Warriors were fresh off of a three set victory over the Chargers of Dominican University. They were looking for back to back wins for the first time this year. The first set was all Highlanders early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Warriors climbed back in at 14-12, capitalizing on a handful of NJIT mistakes. However, NJIT would go on a 5-0 run to close out the first set winning 25-16.
The second set was once again all NJIT early on. Merrimack trailed quickly at 7-2. The Warriors once again got right back into it behind some great play by
Logan Whitaker and
Kai Vogel. It would once again be a Highlanders run late in the set that would squash the Warriors chance of coming back. NJIT would go on to secure a set two win at 25-16.
Just as it was in the first two sets, the Highlanders took a large lead early. MC put up quite the fight going on a 4-0 run making it a ten to nine match. The Warriors would look to extend the match to a fourth set to try to avoid a three set sweep. The match started to slip away from Merrimack with NJIT continuing to tack on points and ultimately pulling out a set three 25-18 win.
