Men's Volleyball Downed in NEC Matchup with Long Island

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack Men's Volleyball team lost to Long Island University on Friday night 3-1.

The Sharks opened up the first set with three straight points. The Warriors responded by tying the set up at five. Long Island found themselves up 11-7 later on in the set. Logan Whitaker had a kill to put Merrimack down four. Back-to-back aces from Xander Thesz put the Warriors down just one. The Sharks bite back going up by five. The would end the set on a three-point run, winning the first set by eight.

Merrimack opened the second set on a two-point run. The Sharks came back to two the set at two. A Miles Dewhirst kill, followed by a Thesz ace gave the Warriors a one-point lead. Zyshonne Lang had a kill to put Merrimack up 13-11. The Warriors scored three points in a row to go up by four. Merrimack would end up winning set two by five points.

The third set started with both teams getting seven points. The Warriors then added two more to go up by two. Later on in the set, Lang, Dewhirst, and Thesz all had kills to put Merrimack up by two. Long Island battled back to tie the set at 17. Merrimack then added three points to go up by three. The Sharks once again tied the set after going on a three-point run of their own. Both teams battled, but Long Island would score five of the last seven points of the set, to win and take a 2-1 lead.


The Warriors found themselves down six early o in the fourth set. Matthew Motes had a kill to cut the deficit to five. Down eight, Lang had a kill to make it a seven-point lead for the Sharks. Late in the set, Merrimack went on a four-point run to cut it down to five. Long Island would score the last two points of the set to win the match 3-1.

●  Dewhirst had a team-high 15 kills.
Carson Bashford had 38 assists during the match .
Kyle Standage had 12 digs in the game.

The Warriors will be back in Hammel Court on Saturday to take on St. Francis Brooklyn. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
