FAIRFIELD, CT – The Merrimack College men's volleyball team fell in three sets to Sacred Heart in their first of two matches on the weekend versus the Pioneers.
The Basics
Score: Merrimack 0, Sacred Heart 3
Records: Merrimack (6-9, 1-2), Sacred Heart (7-11, 2-3)
How It Happened
The first set would start with back to back points for Merrimack and then it would be Sacred Heart scoring three straight. The Pioneers would be up 8-5 before the Warriors went on a six point blitzing to take the lead. A 10-2 run for the Pioneers would put them in front midway through the set. They would maintain that lead and secure a first set win, 25-19.
The second set was the most closely contested of the three.
Isaiah Vogel started the set with a kill, followed by a quick response from Sacred Heart. The teams would go on to trade points back-and-forth up until it was tied at 21 each. Sacred Heart would then score 4 of the next five points to win the set 25 to 22.
Merrimack was looking to avoid a three set sweep against their NEC foes. Sacred Heart would start the set off scoring five of the first six points. Merrimack would be able to battle back in and be down by just three late in the set at 19 to 16. Sacred Heart would score back to back points to go up 21 to 16 and even though the Warriors were able to make it close with a few key points, SHU would be able close it out 25-21.
